Nespresso — Client Partnership 2021/2023

Designing for
the perfect cup.

Over two years at Designit Munich, Nespresso was one of our most enduring client relationships — a partnership that stretched across industrial design, UX, motion and emerging technology. Rather than a single brief, the work evolved continuously alongside the brand's ambition: to deliver the perfect cup, every time. Each project approached that goal from a different direction.

User Experience

Mapping connectivity to
moments that matter.

Nespresso tasked Designit with exploring IoT opportunities for their NEO machine. Starting from the existing user journey, we mapped potential connectivity use cases against user values and experience principles — ensuring technology would serve real needs rather than become a gimmick. From an initial pool of 18 opportunity areas, six were selected and brought to life as illustrated use case scenarios in a co-creation workshop with the Nespresso team.

Video Production

Your taste profile,
built cup by cup.

To pitch the NEO subscription concept internally, we produced a video walking through the full taste discovery experience. A curated starter box arrives at your door, and a guided tasting session — orchestrated between the machine's HMI and the companion app — helps build your personal taste profile. Future recommendations grow from there. I handled render animations, UI animations, voice-over production and editing, combining motion assets with footage provided by Nespresso.

Industrial Design

One design language,
every configuration.

For Nespresso's semi-public machine range, we ideated design directions that had to hold up across vastly different setups — from compact standalone units to large modular configurations with milk modules and recipe extensions built for office and hospitality environments. The design language needed to feel coherent whether the machine stood alone or grew into a full system. My work spanned early sketching and ideation through to detailed Illustrator renders rolled out across the full machine family, as well as physical foam models to evaluate form and proportion.

VR Experience

Testing the full journey
before building a single machine.

Starting as a personal initiative during project downtime, I prototyped a VR demo in Unity for the Meta Quest to explore how virtual reality could be used for early-stage user testing of large public machines. The concept landed well with Nespresso, and led to a dedicated VR project I took the lead on — a fully interactive simulation of the Intervallo airport lounge machine. Users could approach the machine, select a recipe via the touchscreen, tap to pay, place their cup and watch the coffee brew, then move along to collect sugar, a stirrer and a lid before disposing of their cup to restart the loop. The experience required almost no introduction, making it an effective tool for testing whether the machine's interaction flow was intuitively understood.

This work was carried out at Designit Munich between 2021 and 2023 as part of an ongoing client partnership with Nespresso, spanning industrial design, user experience, video production and emerging technology.
